Dear Parents and Students,

This will be the last of the Branching Out Newsletters for the 2009 –
2010 school year. As such, I really wanted to take a moment or two to
thank several folks for helping to make this a terrific year all
around. First, thank you to all the parent volunteers that helped us
out this year. Recently, we counted volunteer hours and once again we
have exceeded one thousand volunteer hours in the school. This is a
really amazing feat given the small student population. Volunteers
played so many vital roles, from tutors to chaperones, your assistance
really helped to make a positive difference for kids.

Another group of folks that were a tremendous support this year were
the PTA. Your fund raising efforts and help with events really
expanded opportunities for kids. Thanks for all the effort to support
our schools!

A great big thank you to the School Board members who gave up their
personal time in service to the community. All that time, energy, and
effort has helped to build a school District that all may be proud of.

We would be sorely remiss this year if we didn’t pause a moment to
thank Lori Aubertin for all of her contributions to MSS over the past
several years. With reductions in force at HMS, Lori came to us
several years ago and has been a remarkable teacher for our children.
Lori is returning to HMS this year, as a position has become available
at the school. We will certainly miss her, but look forward to her
working in partnership with our staff in the future.

Thank you to all the parents who attended our Bridges transition
meeting this past week. We hope you found it helpful and
informative. Speaking on behalf of our staff, we really look forward
to next year and working with you and your children. Having the
students spend a few hours with us last week provided us with a great
glimpse at how wonderful the upcoming class is and how positive they
can be.

As we close up the school year and look to the summer months to
come, I am excited by the stories from the kids describing their
anticipation and excitement regarding reconnecting with family and
friends, engaging is adventures both in our community and outside our
State. Summer is such an invigorating time for kids and really is
something that helps kids in many ways to expand upon the learning
that they do in our classrooms each and every year. Trips to museums,
experiences in the woods or at the lake, and visits with families all
make terrific background knowledge and fodder for conversations and
writing. These events become the “text-to-world” connections that our
kids make when reading new literature, and really bolster their
ability to draw upon personal experiences to create meaning in what
they read or see.

A few parting tips for parents for a happy and successful summer
experience for kids:

Have fun… summer is a time for kids to relax and recharge, to create
wonderful memories with their families.

Discover a new interest together… summer offers us a new set of
experiences, events and opportunities to learn more about our children
and their interests.

Read, Read, Read… reading is perhaps one the most intimate and
personal connections to individual thinking our children can
experience. It challenges their ideas, shares new beliefs, and
affords children access to places they may never have known or
experienced. Reading daily is arguably the single most effective
means of maintaining lack of academic regression over the summer months.

On behalf of all of us at MSS we wish you and your families all the
happiest and most enjoyable of summers and we look forward to your
return next year. Have a great summer ahead!
