HMS Parent Flash 12/16/11
Notes in brief
It doesn't take much effort to come face to face with statistics on the decline of the American family or bad news on the economy. Surely, there are families hurting this time of year even in our neighborhoods. Yet, what I saw on display this week at our Holiday Concerts were scores of multi-generational families enjoying each other and the performance of the Harold Martin students.
It wasn't just the sheer numbers of people coming to support their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, nieces, and nephews. For 30 minutes, the world belonged to the students and they did not disappoint us as they sang their hearts out with tunes they had mastered thanks to our Music Director Edna Marie Griffin and the support of their teachers. Thank you all for supporting the arts so strongly...and for supporting our students.
On a recent inspection from the state Fire Marshall's Office our school was complimented for being a safe place to learn. However, there are some modifications we need to make and one is fairly significant. You will notice that classroom doors are now regularly closed as you walk through the building. In the past, we gave teachers the flexibility to keep the doors open during instruction but since our building does not have a sprinkler system, we no longer have the flexibility to keep the doors regularly open. As fire spreads much faster with a good supply of oxygen the rationale is that it's guaranteed that doors will close during evacuation with automatic door closers. Adapting to this is taking time and clearly changes the feel of the building. Frankly, it's a hard transition for me but I don't have any choice but to enforce the mandate from the Fire Marshall and the Hopkinton Fire Chief. I'd be glad to answer any questions.
Our last day of school next week is Thursday. We'll have a brief Parent Flash on that day.
Again, thank you so much for encouraging our students. I continue to be thankful to work in a community that supports education so strongly.
Have a great weekend. Maybe I'll see you shopping!
Best,
Bill

Project Graduation 2012
Dear Hopkinton Community Member,
We are sending you this letter because we are planning the next PROJECT GRADUATION event. As you may know, this is an annual tradition for all graduating seniors. It is an opportunity for the graduates to celebrate their numerous accomplishments and their graduation in a safe, substance-free environment.
The graduates are transported by bus to a “secret” location. They are chaperoned by volunteer parents and teachers. Once at the location, they enjoy numerous activities, food, and generally have a wonderful last bonding time together as a class. They are then transported back to Hopkinton and returned safely to their homes by parents.
In order for PROJECT GRADUATION to be a continued success, we ask families of the graduates, parents of all Hopkinton students, and the community as a whole to make contributions to the event.
Each and every donation is tax-deductible and any individual or organization that contributes will be recognized in the graduation program on June 8, 2012. We hope you will consider making a donation at this time. You will receive a thank you letter documenting your contribution for tax purposes.
We, the parents of graduating seniors, want to thank you for all your previous support for this 25-year-long community tradition and hope we can continue to provide a safe, fun experience for our students this year and for many years to come.
Sincerely,
The Project Graduation Committee:
Fonda Beane, Peggy Baron, Sue Batchelder, Michelle Benson, Susan Buehler, Maggie Cook, Heidi Coen, Mandy Fraser, Scott Herman, Martha Madsen Greabe, Marcia McCaffrey, Amy Messer, Nancy Nee, LeeAnne Vance, Ann Wayland, Wendy Wetterer, Brenda White, Vickie Anderson-White, Dennie Yianakopolos.
