PE PROGRESS
Kindergarten
Kindergarten physical education classes continue to focus on motor
skill development. In the new warm up activity of “The Never Ending
Relay”. The children enjoy choosing partners and then taking turns
while they practice crawling, galloping, hopping, and skipping. They
are beginning to enhance cardiovascular endurance by performing jogs
around the Multi-purpose room. They are already doing five laps
around the MPR, well on their way to a total of seven continuous
laps, which equals about one quarter of a mile.
Kindergarten and First Grades have recently begun a Manipulatives
Unit, learning how to manipulate or control a variety objects in many
different ways. Both grade levels have used bean bags, hula hoops,
and playground balls to work on tossing, catching, throwing for
accuracy, dribbling, and balancing skills. First graders have also
been able to use wands, jump ropes, and parachute play to learn about
grip strength, agility, and eye/hand coordination.
Grade Two
Grade two physical education classes continue to focus on fitness.
Through the use of an Upper Body Fitness Mat that provides ten
different exercise stations, students were introduced to a variety of
activities to enhance upper body strength. The students also
participated in a Playground and Pavement Games Unit. This was an
opportunity for the students to experience some of the “old favorite”
playground games from yesteryear: Four Square, Two Square, Hopscotch,
Skelly, Marbles, Jacks, Cat’s Cradles, Frisbee Golf, Monkey in the
Middle, and Ring Toss to name just a few. What a fun time!
Grade Three
Third grade physical education focused on the skills and strategies
of Soccer. Students worked on the offensive skills of dribbling,
trapping, and passing the soccer ball. They also learned the
defensive techniques of shielding and the draw back turn. The
students learned how to perform a proper Throw In, Drop Kick Clear,
and Kick Off. All of these skills, techniques, and strategies were
then applied in a variety of modified games. Third graders have been
busy!
