HOPKINTON MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL MISSION
We foster a learning environment that is safe, supportive, and respectful.
We promote personal integrity, intellectual curiosity, and civic responsibility.
We provide traditional and innovative opportunities for students to maximize their potential
Mother Nature sure has made her presence known this week. Between the rather cold temperatures and almost two feet of snow there is no denying that winter is here to stay. Upon reflection (and well after I got shoveled out) I think it is a nice way to usher in the New Year. The glittering coat of deep snow gives the world a fresh new look. Part of welcoming in the New Year is the tradition of declaring resolutions. I am still in the process of determining what I will work on this year but I am sure that some of the usual resolutions will come into play: loose weight, exercise more, carve out more family time, read more, etc. But this year I am hoping to add or reinvigorate a hobby or two. I am toying around with the idea of playing guitar or learning photography. This past weekend we spoke about this as a family and while my kids are a little young to really understand the whole concept, we decided as a family to cook together on the weekends and to hug more this year. It may not be a new guitar but family, food, and hugs is music to my ears. I hope all of your resolutions fill you up and give you peace.
Our teaching staff and technology department have been working diligently to prepare for the launch of our new “Family Portal” feature of our student management software, X2 Aspen. We are pleased to announce that beginning second semester your ‘family account’ in the X2 Aspen portal will be ready for use. We will soon be sending a letter with a personalized password and login ID. With this information you will be able to log on to your child’s secure account and view attendance records, grades & assignments, and other pertinent information from your child’s teachers. We are very excited to bring this new communication tool to you, and it is our hope that it will increase communication and support the success of our students.
The end of the semester is close at hand and mid term exams for high school students are January 21 and 24, for Day 2 exams, and January 26 and 27, for Day 1 exams. The day before each session is set aside as a review day for the exams. Also on January 28 there is no school for students in grades 9 through 12. The second semester for the high school will start on January 31.
Our drama troupe has been extremely busy preparing for our spring musical. Footloose will be performed at Hopkinton High School on April 1st, at 7pm and April 2nd at 7pm. Footloose is the musical version of the movie with the same title staring Kevin Bacon. Mark your calendar now, as tickets will be in high demand. Please check out the website: http://hopkintontheatrearts.weebly.com/ for more details. The theatre and music departments are always looking for volunteers and supporters. If you are interested in helping out or would like more information about the Friends of the Performing Arts (FOPA), please contact either AmyBeth Gelineau or Bridgett Dornik here at HMHS.
While I am sure having a three-day weekend is enough to celebrate, this weekend marks the birthday of one of this countries great thinkers and activists. Martin Luther King Jr. became the voice of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He campaigned to reform and rid racial discrimination in our country. He was assassinated in 1968, and while he may be best known for his “I have a dream” speech, which to this day is often quoted to motivate and remind people of his mission, it is his legacy of tolerance, understanding, and service that lives on.
Enjoy your weekend.
Take care,
Chris Sousa

FAMILY PORTAL COMING SOON!
In our efforts to increase communication and support for our students and their families,
next semester our school will be opening our new “Family Portal”.
This will allow parents and students to log onto our website from a secure Internet connection
and have access to their own grades and attendance information.
This is a new technological feature for Hopkinton Middle High School,
however other schools in New Hampshire have utilized similar features with great success.
It is extremely secure and for more information we will be setting up an introduction evening and support for families before going live.

Dear Parents,
We are sending you this letter because we are planning the next PROJECT GRADUATION. As you may know this is an annual tradition for all graduating seniors.
It is an opportunity for the graduates to celebrate their numerous accomplishments and their actual graduation in a safe, substance free environment.
The graduates are transported by bus to a “secret” location. They are chaperoned by volunteer parents and teachers. Once at the location they enjoy numerous activities, food and generally have a wonderful time. They are then transported back to Hopkinton and returned safely to their homes by parents.
In order for PROJECT GRADUATION to be a success we ask the families of the graduates, parents of all Hopkinton students and the community as a whole to make contributions to the event.
Each and every donation is tax deductible and any individual or organization that contributes will be recognized in the graduation program on June 10, 2011. We hope you will consider making a donation at this time. You will receive a thank you letter documenting your contribution for tax purposes.
We the parents of graduating seniors want to thank you for all your previous support of this 25 year community tradition and hope we can continue to provide a safe, fun experience for our students this year and for many years in the future.
Sincerely,
PG COMMITTEE
Lisa Eberhart, Amy Metcalf, Jeannie and Dave French, Allen and Elaine Lessels, Rene Forrester, Terry Grady, Faye Guilmette, Lynn Brofus, Jodie Russell, Michele Bohlman, Marcella Mackenzie, Nalda Levy

THE 20-20 LINE
Are you or someone you care about having a problem? Are you unable or uncomfortable to come into school to communicate it? The middle school guidance office has a private phone line where individuals can leave a confidential message about a non-academic student issue.
The guidance counselor will listen to the message and determine the appropriate avenue of help. This is a great way to seek support
for yourself or someone you care about. It’s simple. Just call the 20-20 line (746-2020) and leave a message.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Dial-A-Ride Volunteers Needed
Dial A Ride is a volunteer service organization that was started by the Hopkinton Woman's Club over 30 years ago. Our purpose is to transport the elderly in our community to medical and dental appointments in Hopkinton and Contoocook as well as to the Concord area. We are in need of drivers to help us out. You would usually be called only once a month to help and it is Monday through Friday, no weekends involved. Normally you can drop the client at their appointment and do any errands yourself. Feel free to drop by our office at the Slusser Senior Center Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 10 am to 12 noon or call Cathy Rothwell at 746-4364, Pat Dawson at 746-5547, or Danielle Meserve at 746-6866 if you have any questions.
