HAWK News for the week of 12-17-10
Hopkinton Middle High School Mission
· We foster a learning environment that is safe, supportive, and respectful.
· We promote personal integrity, intellectual curiosity, and civic responsibility.
· We provide traditional and innovative opportunities for students to maximize their potential.
While the ground may not be white with snow, holiday cheer (and chill) is in the air. This time of year makes me nostalgic and reflective of past holidays and family gatherings. Those memories remind me that this is truly a warm and generous time of year, and in this community we have many examples of the generosity and kindness of our neighbors. It is with that spirit that I ask folks to take time to remember those who are serving in our armed forces and cannot be with family during the holidays. Let’s keep them in our thoughts and prayers as we celebrate with our own families.
During this time of giving please think about donating to our Student Support Fund, which provides assistance to students and families at various times throughout the year, for a variety of school related needs. A donation in the name of a teacher or staff member would be a nice way to show appreciation and support those in need.
Over the holiday recess our lost and found bins will be sorted and the contents donated to Good Will. If you believe that your child has lost something, please stop by early this week and check out the assortment of jackets, hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.
In our efforts to increase communication and support for our students and their families, next semester our school will be opening our new “Family Portal”. This will allow parents and students to log onto our website from a secure Internet connection and have access to their own grades and attendance information. This is a new technological feature for Hopkinton Middle High School, however other schools in New Hampshire have utilized similar features with great success. It is extremely secure and more information will come in January, as well as individual passwords and log in codes.
This past Wednesday the High School’s Bands and Chorus performed their winter concerts. Ms. Bridgett Dornik, along with our students, and special guest Mr. Kelley, did an outstanding job performing many winter classics. The entire night was exceptional and the talent that our students posses was inspiring. Of course, I particularly enjoyed “King Cotton” by the one and only John Phillip Sousa…there is something about a Sousa march.
One of my favorite movies is, It’s a Wonderful Life. The message of community support, family love, and what is truly important leaves me choked up every time. In the movie there is a scene where a young couple is buying their first home and Mary offers a toast and gifts; “Bread…that this house may never know hunger, Salt…that life may always have flavor, and Wine…that joy and prosperity may reign forever.” I wish you all this and more during this holiday season. Have a safe and happy winter vacation.
Take care,
Chris Sousa

Lost and Found Search:
This Fall, a student lost a purple women’s (size small or x-small) Patagonia rain jacket and would very much like it back to return to her grandmother, from whom it was borrowed. If anyone knows the whereabouts of that jacket, please contact the office or return to the main office. Thank you.

THE 20-20 LINE
Are you or someone you care about having a problem? Are you unable or uncomfortable to come into school to communicate it? The middle school guidance office has a private phone line where individuals can leave a confidential message about a non-academic student issue.
The guidance counselor will listen to the message and determine the appropriate avenue of help. This is a great way to seek support
for yourself or someone you care about. It’s simple. Just call the 20-20 line (746-2020) and leave a message.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Dial-A-Ride Volunteers Needed
Dial A Ride is a volunteer service organization that was started by the Hopkinton Woman's Club over 30 years ago. Our purpose is to transport the elderly in our community to medical and dental appointments in Hopkinton and Contoocook as well as to the Concord area. We are in need of drivers to help us out. You would usually be called only once a month to help and it is Monday through Friday, no weekends involved. Normally you can drop the client at their appointment and do any errands yourself. Feel free to drop by our office at the Slusser Senior Center Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 10 am to 12 noon or call Cathy Rothwell at 746-4364, Pat Dawson at 746-5547, or Danielle Meserve at 746-6866 if you have any questions.
Thanks again!
