Hopkinton Middle High School Mission
· We foster a learning environment that is safe, supportive, and respectful.
· We promote personal integrity, intellectual curiosity, and civic responsibility.
· We provide traditional and innovative opportunities for students to maximize their potential.
December third and the leaves are off the trees, the lights are going up around the neighborhoods, and we have already had one dusting of snow. Winter is beginning and that means the spirit of the holidays will permeate our lives. Recently I have been reading a series of Dr. Seuss books to my two children before going to bed. We have read many of the classics, including some of my favorites, like Horton Hatches the Egg, and The Lorax, and we just started reading The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. At the end of the story I have had to explain why the Who’s were still happily singing and celebrating the holiday, and what Dr. Seuss meant when he wrote that Christmas was much more then the gifts, food, and the like. It is a great story and it has been a nice reminder for me of what is truly important this time of year. Children’s books can teach us so much.
A reminder that on December 9 and 15 are our middle school and high school music concerts respectively. Please consider attending, it is a nice way to spend some time relaxing and enjoying some wonderful holiday music.
If you have not heard, Hopkinton’s Yappin’ Yoda’s, our FIRST Lego League design team, has won the coveted Chairman's award. This will allow them to compete this Saturday (Dec 4th) at the state championships at Manchester High School. This is quite an honor and this small group of dedicated 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students are extremely impressive. Best of luck boys! Our Guidance Department is sponsoring an evening Financial Aid Workshop geared for families of juniors and seniors who are thinking of post high school education. It will be in the in the middle/high school auditorium on December 13th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Anna Clifford from Southern New Hampshire University and the NHASFAA - Speakers Bureau will present.
I was at a conference today sponsored by UNH that focused on understanding bullying. One of the points stressed at a workshop I attended was that one of the best ways to prevent bulling behavior in our children is to model love and understanding at home. With the economy, the holidays, and all the stressors that come with everyday life it was good to be reminded that our children see everything. I am heading home now to hug my kids. Enjoy the weekend everyone.
Take care,
Chris Sousa

THE 20-20 LINE
Are you or someone you care about having a problem? Are you unable or uncomfortable to come into school to communicate it? The middle school guidance office has a private phone line where individuals can leave a confidential message about a non-academic student issue.
The guidance counselor will listen to the message and determine the appropriate avenue of help. This is a great way to seek supportfor yourself or someone you care about. It’s simple. Just call the 20-20 line (746-2020) and leave a message.

Dial-A-Ride Volunteers Needed
Dial A Ride is a volunteer service organization that was started by the Hopkinton Woman's Club over 30 years ago. Our purpose is to transport the elderly in our community to medical and dental appointments in Hopkinton and Contoocook as well as to the Concord area. We are in need of drivers to help us out. You would usually be called only once a month to help and it is Monday through Friday, no weekends involved. Normally you can drop the client at their appointment and do any errands yourself. Feel free to drop by our office at the Slusser Senior Center Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 10 am to 12 noon or call Cathy Rothwell at 746-4364, Pat Dawson at 746-5547, or Danielle Meserve at 746-6866 if you have any questions.
Thanks again!
