HOPKINTON MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL MISSION
We foster a learning environment that is safe, supportive, and
respectful.
We promote personal integrity, intellectual curiosity, and civic
responsibility.
We provide traditional and innovative opportunities for students to
maximize their potential.
I hope this Hawk News finds you in a place that is keeping you warm
during these frigid days.
Mid terms will be held on January 22nd 23rd 26th and 27th. In an
attempt to minimize the financial burden of the district, we are
requiring that students satisfy their financial obligations prior to
taking mid term exams. As stated in the Middle and High School
Handbook for Students and Parents, “All financial obligations must be
fulfilled before a student can take their final or mid term exams.
Students who do not fulfill their financial obligation(s) before mid
term exams, will serve Saturday Educations until their obligation(s)
are met. Students who do not fulfill their financial obligation(s) by
June 1st, 2009 will not be allowed to take their final exams until the
last day of school and will serve Saturday Education until the end of
school.”
Students will be put on a financial obligation list for the following
reasons:
1) Lost or misplaced textbooks
2) Unpaid lunch charges
3) Unreturned library books, magazines or materials
The district has installed a web-based library management system
called Destiny. This software allows users to access the school’s
library catalog via the web. The URL is http://library.hopkintonschools.org
. It has a bibliography and citation feature, and will put any
holding we have into MLA format. Students can select books they've
used for a report and create a printable works cited list in MLA format.
PLEASE NOTE* Wednesday, January 28th will be an early release day.
This is a change from the original 2008 - 2009 school calendar. The
ski program will still run as normal. Any student participating in
the ski program that needs to stay at school will be monitored in the
gym and able to participate in activities. Students will be
transported to Pats Peak, departing at 2:40pm.
The Interact Club will be holding a dance on Saturday, January 17 from
7:30–10:30 pm. There is a $5.00 admission for the dance. Proceeds
from the dance will benefit Hands to Honduras.
Students will have the opportunity to watch President–elect Barack
Obama’s inauguration on Tuesday, January 20. Students will eat lunch
in their classrooms and watch the event. This will mark the beginning
of a tradition to watch the presidential inauguration every four years.
Something to think about:
'We can create our own characters and write our own script, if
properly taught: 'In a very real sense...human being create
themselves' and school can be a stage on which children work through
the plot, rehearse their roles, learn the cues, create social
functions, try out their 'ideal selves' for size, play hero parts
which demonstrate their capability for greatness.' Jerry Starratt

Beaded Snowflake Workshop
Use your imagination to design and make a beautiful, beaded snowflake
to brighten your window this winter. This workshop is for children in
4th grade and up on Wednesday, January 28 (an early release day) at
1:00 PM. The program will be held at the Hopkinton Town Library. Space

GREENER HOPKINTON
Greener Hopkinton is hosting the first of its new Sustainable Speaker
Series on Sunday, January 25 from 2:00 to 4:00 in the Town Library's
Community Room.
Hopkinton residents, Tom and Emilie Burack, will speak on "Greening
Your Home". They will share some of the actions they've taken in
their home to shrink their carbon footprint -- from weatherization and
installation of solar photovoltaic cells to recycling and changing the
way their family uses energy. The Buracks want to make this an
interactive meeting and will encourage attendees to share ideas on
what they are doing in their own homes. Hot cider, cookies and other
snacks will be served at the end of the gathering.
Tom Burack is Commissioner of the NH Department of Environmental
Services and past board member and chair of the Audubon Society's
Board of Directors. Emilie Burack is taking a break from a marketing
career and is busy raising their young family and greening the Burack
home.
