Thoughts from along the adventure:

It has been a wonderful couple of weeks around the school. We have
celebrated an amazing amount of success -- from a staff member being
named as a co-director of the New Hampshire Geographic Society, to
spelling and geography bee winners, to Nordic state championships, to a
FIRST Rookie Award which qualifies us for the national competition, to
two basketball teams in the final four. It is great to see so many
happy young people. The last basketball game was very special. Over
twelve hundred people passionately supported their schools. The crowd
and game were extraordinary. Thank you to everyone who contributed to
the success of our students and teams.

I had the chance to see the “Tin Man,” our entry in the FIRST
competition, in action over the winter break. It was incredible to see
a successful joint partnership between two schools (Hopkinton Middle
High School and John Stark Regional High School). The “Tin Man” was
truly supported by a team of people. Qualifying for the national
competition is quite an honor, especially for a team competing for the
first time. During April vacation, the “Tin Man” will be competing in
Atlanta. The trip to the national competition is a costly endeavor.
If anyone would like to support the team trip to Atlanta, please
contact Will Renauld at wrenauld at Hopkintonschools.org.

Recently, a number of parents have asked how students can transport
digital files back and forth from home. There are two relatively easy
ways for students to so this; a thumb/flash drive or the FTP server.
Students are welcome to place their work on a flash drive and copy it
to their folder at school, or make arrangements with a technician to
open a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account on the FTP server. The FTP
server allows files to be uploaded to the server from home and
downloaded at school. If you need more information, please email me at
schamberlin at hopkintonschools.org

Thank you to the middle school parents for their flexibility regarding
the middle school Winter Carnival. The last minute change to go on
Wednesday created one of the most beautiful and best Winter Carnival
days ever!

I had the honor of attending a ceremony in which one of our students
received the 2006 Daughter's of the American Revolution Good
Citizenship Award. Tom Johnson, a local Historian, gave a presentation
about the roads of Hopkinton. He also spoke of Simon's Tree High
School -- a school that closed when Kearsarge Regional High School was
created. It made me think of the former Henniker and Weare High
Schools that closed when John Stark Regional High School was created.
For a while, the trend was to save money by creating bigger high
schools. The people of Hopkinton have always resisted the temptation
to combine with other towns to save money. Though it is challenging
and expensive to offer a broad program in a small school, we know that
small learning communities, in which each student is well known by an
adult, is the most effective and safest way to educate young people.
Thank you for your continued support for a school that allows us to
know and care for all our young people.

I hope to see everyone at the school district meeting on Saturday,
March 18, 2006 at 9:00am in the high school gym.

Steve Chamberlin
Principal
