[HMHS News] A tardy Hawk News Week of Feb 20

Thoughts from along the adventure:

Please accept my apologies for the Hawk News being sent out late, but
when Mother Nature came through our area on Friday we lost power.

I appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to work on the Internet
available grades. Mr. Bickford is working, with the hosting site, to
have the mid-year exam grades and honor roll status on the web.

This Wednesday night we are hosting our annual Curriculum Night.
Curriculum Night is a chance for our staff members to describe our
academic program and answer questions. A flyer announcing the evening
and the availability of the Program of Studies will arrive at your
homes very soon. The 2006-2007 Program of Studies is available on the
web at www.hopkintonschools.org/ps.pdf. We will also have copies of
the Program of Studies available at Curriculum Night.

This truly has to be one of the most successful winter athletics
seasons ever. The boys and girls Nordic teams have won their state
championships, and the alpine and jumping teams are also very
successful. This week, the girls basketball team will host their first
tournament game, and next week the boys basketball team tournament
games begin.

I hope you had an opportunity to support the Drama Club's one-act-plays
this weekend. The show was great; what is better than seeing young
people perform and having incredible desserts.

Our school is finishing its self-study and preparing for a visiting
team from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The
team of 15 educators will be visiting our school from April 2 - April
5. We will be formally asking for volunteers to be interviewed by the
visiting team in the next few weeks.

As part of our civic expectations for our school's mission, Sandy
Babson, from the town clerk’s office, will be in our school this
Tuesday and Wednesday to offer a convenient way for 18 year olds to
register to vote. Please discuss with your youngsters the importance
of participating in our democratic process. Having all our eligible
students register to vote would be a great accomplishment.

Recently, I made a presentation to the school board about current
influences on high school reform. The new NH state school approval
standards, Breaking Ranks II, our school and community, the New England
Association of Schools and Colleges, and the No Child Left Behind Act
will all have an impact on the future of Hopkinton Middle High School.
In March, we will be forming a committee of teachers, students, and
community members to look at the research and make a proposal to the
school board on how Hopkinton High School should continue to meet the
needs of the 21st century learner. If you are interested in joining
the committee please email me at schamberlin at Hopkintonschools.org.

When we return from vacation it will be March, and before you know it,
we will be in the high school gym for the annual Hopkinton School
District meeting. I hope you mark March 18 on your calendar, as it is
a very important day.

Thank you for your support.

Steve Chamberlin
Principal

MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS OF 2009

We need your help…

The freshmen class is looking for parents to help with refreshments for
the remainder of the basketball season including the first round of
playoffs. The following dates need coverage: Feb. 21, 23, and March
2. An adult needs to be present in order to have students sell
refreshments. Mr. Renauld’s commitment to the US First Robotic
Competition will limit the amount of time he will be available. The
last games of the season and tournament games can be very successful
fundraisers. If we do not have parental coverage the class will lose
out on this fund raising opportunity. Please contact Mr. Renauld,
Class Advisor, at 746-4167, ext. 268 if you can help with coverage.

Thank you!
