Thoughts from along the adventure:
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow; there will be six more weeks of mild
winter weather. I hope that does not mean that our skiers are going to
miss out on more skiing. I was sorry to hear that the Rotary Nordic
Ski race is cancelled this weekend.
During the last few weeks, Mr. Kelley, Mrs. Lajoie, Mr. Fox and I have
met with some new middle and high school students for “Pizza with the
Principal” and “Bagels-n-Banter.” It is nice to talk with students
about what it is like to be a new student in a new school. I was so
pleased to hear that their transition to Hopkinton Middle and High
Schools has been positive.
I am excited about a new American Sign Language course we are offering
this semester. Lindsay Morin, a new special educator with a degree in
American Sign Language, has a ¼ credit course being piloted in the high
school.
A number of staff members were able to attend a powerful presentation
by Michael Nerney, an expert in adolescent brain research and
drug/alcohol education. He began with a rather bleak picture of
current drug use and then offered some wonderful advice for parents to
reduce child drug use. He recommended the following five A's in
parenting:
A – Aware – Be aware of your child’s friends, music, and whereabouts
A – Alert – Be alert to changes of behavior and temperament
A – Awake – Be awake when your child returns home. Give them the
welcome home hug long enough to make sure the students exhale.
A – Assertive – Create boundaries for your child with short
consequences that easily implemented
A – Affirmative – Speak with an unbending conviction about the
expectations of behavior
I am pleased to announce that we have contracted with Second Start of
Concord, the services of Michael Major as our new SAP (Student
Assistance Program) Coordinator. Mr. Major comes to us with experience
in schools and mental health organizations. He will be forming a
community-based task force to help facilitate education and a community
wide program.
Recently, personal music players have started to surface in the halls,
the student center, at break, and at lunch in the middle school and
high school. As part of our mission to foster the social development
of young people, we do not allow personal music players in the halls or
common areas. I would appreciate your support in discussing this
policy with your youngsters. If students repeatedly ignore this
policy, the music payers will be held in the main office until they can
be given to parents or guardians. Our hope is not to have a collection
of personal music players, but provide an environment that supports
positive and appropriate social interaction.
The long awaited Penguin Plunge is taking place this Sunday. Please
wish for nice weather as Mr. Kelley, a dozen or so students, and I take
the cold dip into the Atlantic.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy the Super Bowl.
